Quick answer
New plaster must be fully dry, usually 4 to 6 weeks, then sealed with a mist coat of thinned emulsion before two finish coats. On new builds we also fill settlement cracks and upgrade the thin contract matt to a wipeable finish.
Plaster that is painted too soon, or without a mist coat, leads to peeling and blotchy patches. We check moisture levels, apply the mist coat and build up the finish properly.
New-build homes are usually finished in a thin contract matt that marks easily. After the first year of settling, we fill the hairline cracks and repaint in a wipeable finish.
